@joey: I am being pedantic, this group never became astronauts, they didn’t reach space. They flew really high, like that guy that jumped out of a balloon at that height.
Good point.

there are some things we don't know about existence and whether the earth is a simulation or even a creation.
but we can do some statistical analysis on it.. the probability of a planet like earth existing in the goldilocks zone and having a moon that perfectly eclipses the sun is extremely low, but it's not impossible.
the habitable zone (or goldilocks zone) around a star is the region where a planet could potentially support liquid water on its surface.
Same as when we are born - the chances of us being "us" exactly is extremely low, and yet billions of people walk the earth.
Yes, each of us are unique and special - just like everyone else.
Also, I didnt think this topic would attract one of SeaBreeze's charts , but it has come close :).

There is potentially other life that exists in the universe, or our galaxy, maybe still even in our solar system.
The problem is the vast distance. The recent planet they believe has indicators of biological signatures in its atmosphere is 125 light years away. That means that a signal sent today would take 250 years before we get a reply - if there is intellligent life on that planet that is capable of sending radio signals.
Just for context, travelling at 400 000km/h, it would take almost 200 000 years to reach that planet. Broadly speaking , this is a close planet when you consider the milky way is 100 000 light years across.
For arguments sake, if there is a civilisation exactly like us, with all the exact same technology etc, that has evolved somewhere else in our galaxy, chances are we will never know about it.
However, using the same argument, lets say that the civilisation like ours is 1000 years more advanced than us? If humans dont self-destruct, what technology will we have in 1000 years? Will it be possible to crack all the problems involving space travel distances in that time? What if the civilisation is 10 000 years more advanced? 10 000 years is the blink of an eye in evolution and maybe humans could make breakthroughs in science that seem impossible today, once again - if we dont annihilate ourselves in the meantime.
If life is common in the universe and if there are civilisations that have developed like ours and are thousands of years ahead of us, then there is a chance that aliens are here already.
how many of you here remember 1975?
i hope the newer generations never forget.the true believers got shamed for it.
those who were hedging their bets, fared much better.
Reading through these stories and memories its clear that the 1975 hype - created solely by the GB, had profound and lasting effects on individuals lives and future plans.
It makes the recent announcement by the GB that "they never feel the need to apologise for anything they get wrong" even more sickening.

I dont remember 1975 but its the reason my parents became jw's.
I'm curious though; in your opinion what percentage of JW's in your general age group know nothing about it?
Just on a related topic, somone who witnessed the generation change of 1995 would have to have been born about 10-15 years earlier to remember and appreciate what it meant. That person would now be 40-45 years old. Time goes too quick.
https://jwfacts.com/watchtower/governing-body.php .
here is an example how the wts has "adjusted" scripture.
the governing body has gone as far as to change the text of micah 6:8 in their 2013 new world translation of the holy scriptures (nwt) in order to be able to demand loyalty.
After reading about 20 translations, 99% use the words justice and mercy (or kindness). I would like to see the reasoning behind how they arrived at obedience instead of mercy.

@joey: that was a cosmonaut. Cosmonauts = Soviet, Astronauts = NASA, Groundonauts = Europeans.
we are being that pedantic now are we?
Ok - check Sally Ride.
Does everyone feel better now?
i like to take a peek at the kids over on reddit every week or so.. this thread caught my eye:" curious….
do any ex jw or pimo, still believe the world is ending.
i see people who have never been witnesses think that the world will end soon and they say things like “jesus is coming soon”….
It would be hard to find a period in history where people haven't felt this.
Maybe as we get older it gets worse?
Now with social media we are all bombarded with more crap than ever, showing the worst of human behaviour.
i was doing some research on the taxable status of money being gifted to co’s and travelling missionaries and was surprised with what i found.
i had assumed that it was not taxable income in australia.. it is taxable income in australia and it‘s likely that the same rules apply in some other countries.. a registered religious institution only receives tax free status on donations because they have been endorsed by the australian tax office.
travelling overseas and missionaries are not in this category.. there’s a tax ruling that goes into great detail.

There is probably a minimum amount you are allowed to receive in gifts before it becomes taxable income.
Yes - thats exactly right. At the moment its $18200.00 AUD, not really a lot.
